NOTE:
Before attempting this procedure, check the System Setup
program to ensure that Boot First device is set to
Diskette Drive.
·Save your
work, exit all application programs, and turn off your
computer.
·Remove all
PC Cards and external devices including monitors, keyboards,
and your mouse.
·Remove the
computer from the C/Dock Expansion Station or C/Port APR.
(if attached)
·Insert the
BIOS upgrade diskette into the diskette drive.
·Connect
the AC adapter to your computer. Make sure that a charged
battery is installed.
NOTICE: Do not
interrupt the BIOS upgrade program after it starts.
Interrupting this program by pressing the power button or by
losing AC line voltage because of a power outage (and
without a charged battery as a backup) may permanently
corrupt the system BIOS.
·Turn on
your computer and follow the directions on the display.
·After the
BIOS upgrade is completed, remove the diskette from the
diskette drive.
3. Initial Setup Procedure For
reinstalling Microsoft® Windows® 98 upgrade and the device
drivers on my Dell™ Latitude™ CP or CPi portable computer?
To complete the
initial setup of Windows 98 on your Dell system, follow
these steps:
NOTE: During the Windows 98 setup, click NEXT, press
the right [arrow] key, or press [ENTER] to continue to the
next step.
Boot
into Windows 95.
Insert the Dell Windows 98 Upgrade Safe Boot
diskette into the floppy drive.
Click Start | Run.
Type
A:\Setup and press [ENTER].
The
Dell Windows 98 Upgrade Safe Boot
window appears.
After a few moments, the Welcome screen
appears.
Click Next.
The
program copies files from the hard-disk drive to the
diskette.
The
program warns you that your system will be rebooted and
advises you to leave the diskette in drive A.
Click OK.
After the system has booted, an H:
prompt appears in an MS-DOS® window.
Insert the Windows 98 Upgrade CD into
the CD-ROM drive.
Type
Setup and press [ENTER].
Press [ENTER] again.
Scandisk will
complete a routine check on your computer.
Use
the [arrow] keys to select Exit.
Press [ENTER].
The
program scans the registry and copies files needed for
Windows 98.
The
Windows 98 Setup screen appears.
Click Continue.
The
Windows 98 License Agreement appears.
Read
the license agreement.
Click the I accept the Agreement radio
button.
Click Next.
The
Product Key window appears.
Type
the Product Key in the fields provided. NOTE: The Product Key is on the
Certificate of Authenticity that came with your
Windows 98 Software.
Click Next.
The
Select Directory screen appears.
Select the directory in which you want to install
Windows 98. NOTE: Dell recommends that you accept
the default file path of C:\WINDOWS.
Click Next.
The
Preparing for Windows Installation
window appears.
Disk
space will be verified.
You
are asked if you want to save the system files.
Click the Yes radio button.
Click Next.
The
Select Uninstall Drive window appears.
Select where you want to save your Windows 95 files. NOTE: Dell recommends that you choose
the default directory to save the system files from you
Windows 95 operating system. In the event of an error
during the upgrade, these files will enable you to
recover your data. NOTE: The file-saving option requires
50 MB of free hard disk drive space.
Click OK.
The
Identification screen appears.
The
Computer Name, Workgroup,
and Computer Description fields are
populated with the information entered during the
original Windows 95 setup.
Modify the information as necessary.
Click Next.
The
Establishing Your Location screen
appears with the country or region you selected during
Windows 95 setup as the default.
Change the location setting, if necessary.
Click Next.
The
Startup Disk screen appears.
Remove the Dell Windows 98 Upgrade Safe Boot
diskette from the diskette drive.
Click Next.
Windows prepares the files for creating a startup
diskette.
The
Insert Disk window appears.
Label a blank diskette, as prompted, to create startup
diskettes.
Insert the disk into the diskette drive.
Click OK.
Windows writes the startup files to the diskette.
A
message is displayed indicating that the file copying
process is finished.
Remove the diskette.
Click OK.
The
Start Copying Files screen appears.
Click Next.
The
Welcome to Windows 98 screen appears,
followed by various screens that display information
about the operating system.
After a few minutes, the Windows 98 Setup
window appears, notifying you that setup is
ready to restart your computer.
Make
sure there is not a diskette in the diskette drive.
Click OK.
The
Restart Computer window appears.
Click Restart Now or wait 15 seconds
and the computer will restart automatically.
The
Windows 98 screen appears with the
message Getting ready to run Windows for the
first time.
Several windows indicate that Windows 98 is setting up
hardware, initializing drivers, and detecting hardware
and Plug and Play devices.
The
Restart Computer window appears.
Click Restart Now or wait 15 seconds
and the computer will restart automatically.
Enter your network user name and password, if prompted,
or press [Esc] to bypass this screen.
Click OK.
Confirm your password.
Click OK.
Windows 98 finalizes your setup.
The
Welcome to Windows 98 screen appears.
To
complete the upgrade, you must install the system device
drivers that are on the Dell System Updates For
Windows 98 CD that is included the upgrade kit.
See the next section, Installing System Drivers,
for instructions.
4. Install the System Drivers on my
Dell™ Latitude™ CP or CPi portable computer
After upgrading
your system to Windows 98, you must install your system
drivers. All the drivers you need are included on theDell
System Updates for Windows 98 CD that is included with
the Windows 98 upgrade kit.
NOTE: The system drivers provided by Dell have been
tested to ensure optimal performance with Windows 98. Dell
recommends that you use the drivers provided by Dell instead
of those available from the Windows 98 Update Wizard.
Installing NeoMagic® Video Display Drivers:
Video display drivers control features such as screen
resolution and the number of screen colors. To install the
NeoMagic video drivers, follow these steps:
Insert the Dell System Updates for Windows 98
CD into the CD-ROM drive.
Click Start | Settings | Control Panel.
Double-click the Display icon.
The
Display Properties window appears.
Click the Settings tab.
Click Advanced.
Click the Adapter tab.
Click Change.
The
Update Device Driver Wizard appears.
Click Next.
Select the Display a list of all the drivers in
specific location radio button.
Click Next.
The
Install from Disk window appears.
Type
X:\Video, where X is your
CD-ROM drive letter.
Click OK.
The
Select Device window appears.
Make
sure that NeoMagic MagicGraph 128XD is
highlighted.
Click OK.
The
Update Device Driver Wizard window
appears.
Click Next to begin copying the files.
When
prompted to install the driver, click Finish.
The
Display Properties window appears.
Click Apply.
Close the Display Properties window.
When
prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
The
system restarts.
Installing Crystal® Audio Drivers:
Audio drivers
allow you to customize the sound features of your computer.
To install the Crystal audio drivers, follow these steps:
Click Start | Run.
The
Run dialog box appears.
Type
X:\Audio\Setup, where X
is your CD-ROM drive letter.
Click OK.
The
Crystal Audio Setup window appears.
Click Install Driver.
When
prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.
The
system restarts.
The
New Hardware Found window appears.
Select Search for the best drivers for your
device.
Click Next.
The
Add New Hardware Wizard window appears.
Deselect Floppy Drive.
Select Specify a location.
Type
X:\Audio, where X is
your CD-ROM drive letter.
Click Next.
The
Add New Hardware Wizard appears.
Click Next.
When
prompted, click Finish.
Installing Synaptics® Touchpad Drivers:
Touchpad drivers
and associated utilities allow you to customize the
operation of your touchpad and cursor features. To install
the Synaptics touchpad drivers, follow these steps:
Click Start | Run.
The
Run dialog box appears.
Type
X:\Touchpad\Setup, where X
is your CD-ROM driver letter.
Click OK.
The
Welcome Wizard window appears.
Click Next.
You
will be prompted for the directory in which to copy the
files.
Click Next to accept the default
directory.
The
Start Copying Files window appears.
Click Next.
The
Setup Complete window appears.
Restart the computer by clicking Finish.
The
Synaptics Tell Me More window appears.
Click Close.
The
Touchpad icon appears in the taskbar.
Installing the Yamaha® Soft Wavetable:
The Soft
Wavetable allows you to customize certain audio features.
The Yamaha Soft Wavetable application program included on
the CD is the latest version available from the
manufacturer. However, you do not need to install this
version for proper operation of Windows 98.
To install the Soft Wavetable, you must remove the old
application program and reinstall the new one.
To remove the Soft Wavetable, follow these steps:
Click Start | Settings | Control Panel.
Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
Click Yamaha Soft Synthesizer S-YXG50.
Click Add/Remove.
When
asked to confirm the operation, click Yes.
The
system restarts.
To install the
new Soft Wavetable, follow these steps:
Click Start | Run.
The
Run dialog box appears.
Type
X:\Yamaha\Setup, where X
is your CD-ROM drive letter.
Click OK.
The
Welcome Wizard window appears.
Click Next.
A
warning message appears.
Click Yes.
Read
the license agreement.
Click Yes to accept it.
Click Next to copy files to the default
directory.
You
will be asked to set the default MIDI
and audio device in the Control Panel.
Click Yes.
An
Information window appears.
Click OK to set the default
MIDI and audio device.
The
Setup Complete message appears.
Click OK.
Click OK when prompted to restart the
computer.
C/Dock Quick Install Drivers:
If you have a
C/Dock Expansion Station or a C/Port APR , you must install
the C/Dock Quick Install drivers for Windows 98 .
To install the C/Dock Quick Install drivers, follow these
steps:
Click Start | Run.
The
Run dialog box appears.
Type
X:\dock\setup, where X is your
CD-ROM drive letter.
Click OK.
The
Welcome Wizard window appears.
Click Next.
Read
the message in the Information window.
Click Next.
You
will be asked to start the file copying procedure.
Click Next.
You
will be asked to confirm that you want to install the
CMD Bus Master IDE driver.
Click Yes.
When
prompted to restart the system click Yes.
NOTE: After you install the C/Dock
Quick Install drivers, a message that asks you to reboot
the computer may appear. This message is normal, and
rebooting will not cause any damage to your computer,
docking station, or data. Reboot your computer as
instructed.
Modem Power Management:
Some PC Card
modems require that PC Card modem power management be
disabled. However, Windows 98 does not provide a convenient
method to enable or disable PC Card modem power management.
The Dell System Updates for Windows 98 CD includes
two programs to enable or disable PC Card power management.
When you disable PC Card power management, power is always
on, even when you are not using the modem. Dell recommends
that you disable PC Card power management for computers
running Windows 98.
To disable PC Card power management, follow these steps:
Insert the Dell System Updates for Windows 98
CD into the CD-ROM drive.
Click the Start | Run.
The
Run dialog box appears.
Type
X:\util\PCmodemOn, where X is
your CD-ROM drive letter.
Click OK.
PCmodemOn
sets power to the PC Card to always on.
To enable PC Card
power management, follow these steps:
Insert the Dell System Updates for Windows 98 CDinto
the CD-ROM drive.
Click Start | Run.
The
Run dialog box appears.
Type
X:\Util\PCmodemOff, where X
is your CD-ROM drive letter.
Click OK.
PCmodemOff
sets power to the PC Card toalways off,
when not in use.
